rranmore celebration October 7th, 2000
n October 7th an historic event will take place on Beaver Island. Approximately 30 residents of Arranmore, Ireland (the island where most of Beaver Island's original Irish settlers came from) along with 50 relatives and friends from Chicagoland will participate in a "twinning" ceremony which will make sister islands of Arranmore and Beaver Island. his "twinning" has long been discussed and will be a great and historic function for people from both communities. The group will be bused from Chicago to Charlevoix to take the "Emerald Isle" over on Friday the 6th (the boat leaves Charlevoix at 3 and arrives at 5 p.m.). After freshening up the group will attend a potluck dinner and dance at the Parish Hall where there will be a cash bar. People are encouraged to contact Altar Society members to assist or make a dish to pass. n Saturday, tours of the Island will be given as well as discussions (you can be sure) of relationships of the various families with their Beaver Island relatives. There is great excitement in the Arranmore group and we should be sure to show our Beaver Island hospitality. Both Museums will be open from 2 until 4. round 4pm on Saturday the twinning ceremony will take place near the Lighthouse at the entrance to Beaver Harbor. Saturday evening will be spent visiting the local pubs and making friends. he Arranmore people will be staying at the homes of Island relatives. Main street will be taking on a dual name for this event, "Arranmore Way". We are proud to announce that they have named a street "Beaver Island Way" to commemorate the twinning. opefully many of you can attend and meet your relatives or make new friends. We hope to see you all there. Update: A Report |
